LAUREN AND MORGAN GREENE RUN FREE TO BE A 501(C)(3) ANIMAL SANCTUARY ON ROUTE 30 S IN POULTNEY.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN POULTNEY?

Lauren: Three and a half years.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT POULTNEY?

Lauren: It has a good mix of everything. You have Lake St. Catherine for natural beauty. You have Shaw’s for a grocery store. You have local small shops right downtown. And I feel like it’s a good mixture of people in general. And everyone’s nice.
Morgan: I would say definitely welcoming. The most amazing thing that I think I’ve seen over the past few years is the growth. All the stores and shops that were there, but then the enhancements and new shops coming in and under new ownership. I don’t go bicycling, but I think the bicycle shop with a porcupine on the logo is just so cool to see.
Lauren: And all the trails that they’re making, which is really cool. We don’t utilize them, but it’s nice everybody has a niche in Poultney, and I feel like there’s something for everyone, but in a very small community type of way, which is what I probably like the most.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPOT IN POULTNEY?

Lauren: Probably Lake St. Catherine would be the first one. We just recently took time to go in the Original Vermont Store.
Morgan: That was so quaint.
Lauren: Yeah, it’s like one of those things, wow, we’ve been here for three years, never went in and the woman there was super sweet.
Morgan: I was going to say Poultney Pub, I was a little jealous she got a beanie for Christmas and I did not get one, so once they’re done [renovations], I’m going to have to go back in and maybe get one.
Lauren: We had gone there even before we even moved to this area, now living here, being a mile and a half away from it, I was like, guess it was meant to be.

WHAT’S ONE THING NEW YOU’D LIKE TO SEE IN POULTNEY?

Lauren: Natural food store, co-op, or coffee shop.

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU’D LIKE TO SEE NEVER CHANGE?

Lauren: I would hate to see a chain store come in like a big chain store.
Morgan: Another.
Lauren: Another. I think that would kind of tarnish a little bit. It’s too small for that. There’s a small main street and having something big in there would just be very loud.
Morgan: I can’t think of anything other than that. I like everything that’s been coming in.
Lauren: And I love the murals that are going up now

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST DREAM FOR POULTNEY?

Lauren: I’m happy with it. I feel like it’s like this little entity that is trying, not too hard, but really trying to shine. And it is. And it’s very cool to see it steadily grow. Like, it’s not like it’s jumping all the way up here and then having some fails and dropping it down. I feel like the people of Poultney, whoever sits on the boards and the planning do a really good job of it. And it is pretty evident that the people that are making all these changes, the new stores and stuff like that, have kind of a similar vision in that it doesn’t seem like anyone’s trying to be the best or competitive, which is good. I just hope it kind of stays that way.
Morgan: I think big things come with consistency. The pride is there and will continue to grow from people visiting.
Lauren: I also love the little art park because I drive back every day to work. It always makes me happy.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE POULTNEY IN THREE WORDS, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

Lauren: Quaint, Creative, Loyal.
Morgan: Picturesque, Charming, Innovative.

HOW DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE COMMUNITY?

Lauren: The goal for this year is to be more, I don’t know if involved is the right word, but kind of become more of the community? I know that that’s something that we’re missing, both on individual personal levels and also with making friends and acquaintances and sharing our passion with like-minded people.
Morgan: A lot of time spent here building our foundation for the animals was a priority and now that they are safe and have a really good landing spot. I definitely agree with the goal for being out in the community more. We have a free farm stand during the summer, just to share any veggies and flowers and things like that. So kind of inserting us in a way if we see people drive by like waving or stopping to chat. That will be exciting for this upcoming year because we got a pretty good enhanced stand compared to a prior year.

IF YOU COULD HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH ANY FIGURE FROM POULTNEY’S HISTORY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Lauren: I would love to have been a fly on the wall when they were planning the [original] bridge on Thrall Road. That would have been cool. See how they built it. That would have been really cool. What was the discussion? Right here. Got to get over there. Huge gorge. I’d be curious.

THANKS TO LAUREN & MORGAN.
